Antony Jacob Ashish leads the Acoustics and Non-destructive Evaluation Division of Planys Technologies. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras with an M. S. degree specialising in the field ultrasonic non-destructive evaluation (NDE) with applications in the fields of maintenance, quality assurance and design to which he has contributed numerous publications and patents. His currents interests are towards customizing and developing NDE techniques for remotely operated robotic platforms. His previous work experience includes working as a project scientist at the Centre for Nondestructive Evaluation, IIT Madras and as a mechanical engineer in the maintenance division with MRF Tyres, Pondicherry.

Dr. Asokan Thondiyath is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras, India. Dr Asokan is heading the Robotics Laboratory at IIT Madras and has contributed significantly in the development of the first indigenous Autonomous Underwater Robot, which is undergoing sea trials now. Prof. Asokan is the National Secretary of The Robotics Society and the Organizing Chairman for the 2019 International Conference on Advances in Robotics. His areas of teaching and research are Robotics, Product design, and Medical device design. Dr Asokan has published more than 130 papers in International Journals and conferences and has filed 20 patents in India, USA, Europe, and Singapore.

Tanuj Jhunjhunwala is the Co-founder and CEO at Planys and currently leads business development, strategy and fundraising. He is a 2014-batch alumnus from IIT Madras with Btech in Mechanical Engineering and Masters in Product Design. Jill Zande is the President/Executive Director of MATE Inspiration for Innovation. Highlights of her 23 years with MATE include establishing the global ROV (remotely operated vehicle) student competition and coordinating the development of MATE’s Underwater Robotics: Science, Design & Fabrication textbook. Both involved cultivating and maintaining partnerships with industry, professional societies, academic institutions, and STEM professionals. Jill is an active member of the Marine Technology Society (MTS). She served on the MTS Board as the Vice President of Education and Research for 6 years. She currently serves as the MTS-Monterey Bay Section Chair and the Underwater Intervention (UI) Technical Program Committee Marine Education Track Chair and is a member of the MTS ROV and Education Committees. Jill is a 2020 recipient of an MTS Fellows Award, one of the society’s most distinguished achievements. In 2018, she was listed as one of the top ten “Ocean Influencers” by Marine Technology Reporter magazine. Jill has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Marine Science from Penn State University and a Master’s degree in Oceanography and Coastal Sciences from Louisiana State University (LSU). During her Master’s degree program at LSU, Jill participated in research cruises that investigated hydrocarbon seep communities in the Gulf of Mexico using the Johnson Sea-Link and Alvin submersibles.
Nikola Mišković is a Full Professor at University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing where he teaches control engineering related courses. Currently he is the Vice Dean for Research. His research activities are conducted within the Laboratory for Underwater Systems and Technologies (LABUST, https://labust.fer.hr/). He participated in 14 European projects (H2020, FP7, DG-ECHO, INTERREG) out of which he coordinated FP7 CADDY, focusing on the development of the first underwater robot for interaction with divers; H2020 aPad, devoted to commercialization of an autonomous surface vehicles developed in LABUST, and H2020 EXCELLABUST devoted to increasing LABUST excellence in marine robotics. He also participated in 4 Office of Naval Research Global (ONR-G) projects (coordinated 3), 2 NATO projects, and 7 national projects (coordinated 3). He published more than 70 papers in journals and conference proceedings in the area of navigation, guidance and control, as well as cooperative control in marine robotics. Prof. Mišković is a senior member of IEEE (president of Chapter for Robotics and Automation of the Croatian Section from 2016 to 2019), IFAC (member of the Technical Committee on Marine Systems) and Centre for Underwater Systems and Technologies (vice-president since 2010). He participated in 8 conference international programs committees, he is member of 2 journal editorial boards and he serves as a technical reviewer for various international journals. In 2013 he received the young scientist award “Vera Johanides” of the Croatian Academy of Engineering (HATZ) for scientific achievements, and he received the annual State science award for 2015, awarded by the Croatian Parliament.

In this context, an alternative, frequency domain approach is pursued here. In the rest of this work, a specific system form of linearly decoupled but nonlinearly coupled subsystems is examined. The mathematical toolbox of the Hilbert transform is appropriately introduced for obtaining two low-pass subsystems that form an equivalent description of the essential overall system dynamics. The nonlinear coupled dynamics is investigated systematically by partitioning the coupled system state vector in such a way as to fully exploit the low-pass and the band-pass intrinsic features of free dynamics. In particular, by employing the Hilbert Transform, a low-pass equivalent system is derived. Then, a typical case is investigated thoroughly by means of numerical simulation of the original coupled low and band-pass, real-state-variable system and the low-pass-equivalent, complex-state-variable derived one. The nonlinear model equations considered here pave the way for a systematic investigation of nonlinear feedback control options designed to operate mechatronic transducers in energy harvesting, sensing or actuation modes.

Nikolas Xiros is a J.L. Goldman Endowed Professor and Chair of the Boysie Bollinger School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of New Orleans. His career spans more than 25 years in both industry and academia and his expertise lies within the fields of marine and electromechanical systems engineering. He holds an electrical engineer's degree, a MS in math, a MS in physics and a marine engineering doctorate. His research interests are process modeling and simulation, system identification, dynamics and control, reliability, signal and data analysis. He is author of many technical papers and Springer monograph 'Robust Control of Diesel Ship Propulsion'. He is also a Chief Editor for the recently published Springer Handbook of Ocean Engineering.
The tutorial will cover, starting from basic principles of Physics, the modeling of ocean flows such as wind-driven currents and pressure-driven geostrophic flows, and shed light to better understanding of the physical ocean. In particular, the tutorial will cover discuss fundamentally different features of oceanographic flows in contrast to small-scale engineering flows, and also commonality with large-scale atmospheric flows and planetary flows. . The tutorial will discuss several subtle aspects of ocean-flow analysis that may not be easily trackable in the texts on the subject. Fascinating features of oceanographic observations such as westward intensification and topographic steering of currents will be discussed based on the concept of potential vorticity and its conservation. Scope of ocean models such as POM, MITGCM, HYCOM and ROMS will be also addressed in the tutorial.

Dr. P. Ananthakrishnan is a faculty member in the Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras. He teaches courses in Fluid Mechanics, Ship Hydrodynamics, and Oceanography. His research areas are (i) Wave Mechanics, (ii) Wave-Body Interactions; (iii) Development of Numerical Algorithms for Nonlinear Wave-Body Interaction; (iv) Hydro-Elasticity of Ships (v) Ocean Energy Conversion and (vi) Bio-Inspired Propulsion for Marine Vehicles. He has authored several publications on these topics and also, a Chapter on Wave Mechanics in the Handbook of Ocean Engineering.

Dr. Presuel is a Professor in the Ocean and Mechanical Engineering department at Florida Atlantic University. Dr. Presuel research interests are in corrosion, modelling of corrosion processes, as well as methods to prevent or control corrosion. Of particular interest are the corrosion of the reinforcing steel embedded in concrete for marine structures (bridges) and concrete durability.
The paper has three parts: Part-1: Design rules in nature, Mechanics and face of failure. Part-2: Lotus effect, Drag reduction in underwater vehicles, Tuna based oscillating propulsion mechanism, Murray’s law in manifolds and hydraulic circuits. Part-3: Design tools and Applications in Ocean Engineering. A numerical analysis is carried out on the viewport window to study the viewport behaviour at its corner. Acrylic viewport, pressure vessels, underwater thrusters, and pressure compensated hydraulic circuits are widely used components/sub-systems in ocean engineering. Stress reduction at corner of viewport and spherical shell is achieved by Biological Growth Method. Underwater forward propulsion in AUVs is inspired from Tuna based oscillating propulsion mechanism which is used by aquatic animals to propel in forward direction. Drag determination and reduction in underwater propulsion is very important criteria for thruster selection. It can be achieved by making surface texture as hydrophobic like Lotus which show self-cleaning property and tendency to remain dry called Lotus effect. Design of micro-fluidic systems is based on the bio-mimetic design rule of Murray’s law in hydraulic circuits which is obtained from the study of mammalian cardiovascular system’s vascular network. Therefore, many engineering problems like these can be solved by studying nature’s models and taking inspiration from them.

This tutorial aims to highlight the many ways in which accelerating climate change, overexploitation and mismanagement, and ever-growing marine pollution are transforming the chemical and physical characteristics of the world’s ocean basins. This ongoing chemical and physical transformation of the oceans will have profound implications for marine life, Earth’s climate, coastal human populations, and ocean-based economies around the world. The tutorial will discuss the wide-ranging adverse impacts of the ongoing changes in the marine food-web on the Blue Economy of India and other coastal and island nations around the world, and how the young citizens, entrepreneurs, conservationists, academics, policy makers and shapers, can affect change and contribute towards building a sustainable Blue Economy that protects and preserves our planet’s incredibly rich ocean biodiversity. By the end of the workshop the attendees would have learnt: 1. The multitude of ways in which climate change and other human interventions are changing the distribution of marine species in the world’s ocean basins. 2. The socio-economic consequences of these changes in the marine environment for India and other coastal and island nations. 3. The opportunities and mechanisms through which young citizens can contribute towards mitigating the human-caused stressors and conserving the rich ocean biodiversity.

Dr. Pushp Bajaj is a Research Fellow and the Head of the Blue Economy and Climate Change Cluster at the National Maritime Foundation in New Delhi, India. His research areas of interest include climate change impacts on India’s maritime and naval security, climate resilience of India’s critical maritime infrastructure, climate change impacts on marine biodiversity, sustainability in the maritime domain, and the Blue Economy. Prior to joining the Foundation, Dr Bajaj worked as an independent science writer and researcher focusing on climate change and the environment where he published several articles on sustainable development, climate science, climate policy, and related areas. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego, USA, where he was a graduate student researcher for the NSF-funded Centre for Chemical Innovation – Center for Aerosol Impacts on Chemistry of the Environment based in San Diego, CA, USA.
Oxygen is an essential parameter in aquatic research, monitoring and aquaculture. With the introduction of oxygen optodes in 2002 the technical possibilities to measure O2 were enormously improved. Still many end users do not have a sufficient understanding of how to make oxygen measurements with sufficient quality and how to interpret the collected data. This tutorial is intended to present recent findings on oxygen dynamics and how sensors can be handled in the field to improve the data quality. The challenges of measuring in low oxygen environments and the shortcomings of the reference method, Winkler titration, will be discussed. Pressure effects on the sensing foils in deep water will be presented and results from new developments like trace O2 detection and more stable foils with better deep sea pressure behaviour will be presented.

The tutorial session will review the fundamental principles of marine vehicle control. Topics to be covered include: basic concepts in stability, controllability and observability; feedback linearization by dynamic inversion; nonlinear backstepping; control of under-actuated vehicles; sliding mode control and adaptive control.
Dr. Karl von Ellenrieder

Karl Dietrich von Ellenrieder received his B.S. degree in aeronautics and astronautics, with a specialty in avionics, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) in 1990, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University, (USA) in 1992 and 1998, respectively. Since 2016, he has been a Full Professor of Automation in the Faculty of Science and Technology at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano (Italy). From 2003 to 2016, he was with the Department of Ocean & Mechanical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University (USA) where, after being promoted through the ranks from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor, he ultimately served as a Full Professor of Ocean Engineering and as the Associate Director of the SeaTech Institute for Ocean Systems Engineering. His research interests include automatic control, the development of robotic unmanned vehicles, human-robot interaction and the experimental testing of field robots. Prof. von Ellenrieder is a member of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society and the IEEE Control Systems Society.
The ports developed in india are deepened from 9m to 14/16m so that Panamax vessels can be handled. Case studies of Visakhapatnam, Tuticorin and Haldia will be discussed. The design and construction methodology, while the existing berth is in operation and demotion of old structures by controlled blasting with monitoring of vibration of nearby structures will be highlighted for Visakhapatnam port. The proposal for deepening of VOC ( Tuticorin port) will be discussed. The methodology of integrating the block type structure with piled structure along with analysis and design training will be given. The lock gate free Haldia dock complex and the various studies carried out for opening a new entrance so that the vessels can be berthed will be presented. The modifications required in the existing structures will also be explained.
Prof. R. Sundaravadivelu

Dr. R. Sundaravadivelu has joined the Department of Ocean Engineering as faculty in 1982. He is currently Emeritus Professor. He is the Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (second from the department) from 2006. His team with international scientists has bagged the Center of Excellence project funded by MHRD. Prof. R. Sundaravadivelu has carried out industry projects for National and international clients. He has published more than 250 papers in national – international journals and conferences.
He has developed M Tech program in Petroleum Engineering ( ranked at 30 by QS world ranking in 2021)in association with ONGC and User oriented M Tech program in Ocean Technology in association with NIOT. The prestigious Ramseur award was received by the Chilika Development Authority to restore Chilika Lake as a wetland based on his scientific contribution. The pivotal project on coastal protection using “soft” geosynthetics technology in Pentha Oriss was featured in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as India’s initiative on the environmental management.
